Sydney Hogle applies newfound knowledge from internships to career as event manager

Sydney Hogle, a senior at Iowa State University, knew when she started college that she’d be an event management major. In high school, Sydney helped plan her town’s annual gala for the local hospital. She also helped execute events as a member of her school’s student council.

Arriving at Iowa State, Sydney quickly developed a great relationship with her adviser — who she credits, along with the rest of the event management faculty — for supporting her as she advances toward her dream career.

“Our faculty is so amazing; they all have great experiences and networks that help us grow as professionals in this industry,” Sydney said. “They also care about us as individuals, which has been so encouraging and helpful.”

Sydney enjoys how diverse the event management faculty is. They all offer a wide range of real life experiences to share with their students.

Sydney’s classwork and internship experience has prepared her for her future career in event management.

With three internships under her belt, Sydney has utilized and applied skills from her classes to real-world weddings. In her internship roles Sydney regularly partook in general wedding set-up, composed schedules, and did month-of planning activities. Sydney interned with The Old Fifty-Six: Barn Weddings and Events summer 2016, White Ivy Events summer 2017, and White Willow Events this fall semester.

After completing her internships and receiving hands-on work experience, Sydney is confident and excited about where life takes her after graduation. Sydney emphasized how rewarding the program has been for her.

“[Event management] is so rewarding because our job helps people have fun,” Sydney said. “Your days are never the same and you’re always working with other people. If that sounds like something you would enjoy, do it.”
