Lexi Stumpf’s best decision brought her to Iowa State to study apparel design

Lexi Stumpf, a junior at Iowa State University, has always loved fashion. So much so, that she made sure to pursue different aspects of the industry before coming to Iowa State.

“Since as long as I can remember, I have undoubtedly known that pursuing a career in the fashion industry was what I wanted to do with my life. There is nothing else that invigorates and fulfills me the way that designing and styling clothes does,” she said.

Using fashion as a creative outlet in high school, Lexi participated in sewing classes. She also studied through a fashion design and merchandising program at Central Campus in Des Moines, Iowa. Through these experiences, she learned more about the industry while further confirming her career goals.

After her first tour of Iowa State, Lexi knew it was the place for her to further pursue apparel design.

“After my first tour of the campus, I fell in love immediately and knew I was at home. I felt an overwhelming campus-wide sense of acceptance and passion, which reinforced my decision and confirmed that I had made the right choice by choosing Iowa State,” she said.

The classes and clubs Lexi is involved in have further prepared her to pursue a career in the fashion industry.

“I feel very equipped to enter the fashion industry immediately after graduating. My courses have allowed me to learn about each aspect of the industry and gain an in-depth skill set to take with me,” Lexi said.

During summer 2019,  she was able to study abroad in London through Iowa State’s fashion design program at the London College of Fashion. Lexi said she enhanced her knowledge and skill set immensely while she was overseas. Though she loved every part of London, she especially enjoyed the street fashion.

After returning from her study abroad trip, Lexi still feels the initial sense of home that Iowa State’s campus has offered  her from the very beginning. “To this day, I believe [choosing Iowa State] to be one of my greatest decisions that I have made for my future career, and I still feel that warmth and acceptance on campus on a daily basis that originally led me here.”
