Changing Majors

Are you a new student that has not started classes yet or are you a current student?

Current Students

If you are a current student in the College of Human Sciences changing to a major within the CHS, take the following steps to make the change of major official:

  1. Contact your current academic adviser. Your adviser will prepare your advising folder and a file transmittal form.
  2. Visit the College of Human Sciences Student Services Office located in 131 MacKay Hall.
  3. Visit the department or advising office of your new major within the College of Human Sciences.

If you are a current student in the College of Human Sciences changing to a major outside of the CHS, take the following steps to make the change of major official:

  1. Contact your current academic adviser. Your adviser will prepare your advising folder and a file transmittal form.
  2. Visit the College of Human Sciences Student Services Office located in 131 MacKay Hall.
  3. Visit the college office of your new major to obtain the necessary signature(s).
  4. Visit the department or advising office of your new major as directed by the college office.

If you are a current student in a college other than Human Sciences changing to a major within CHS, take the following steps to make the change of major official:

  1. Contact your current academic adviser. Your adviser will prepare your advising folder and a file transmittal form.
  2. Visit the college office for your current major. Your adviser will be able to direct you to the appropriate office. This is an important step as it notifies your current college that you are changing to a new college.
  3. Visit the College of Human Sciences Student Services Office in 131 MacKay Hall to obtain the necessary signature(s).
  4. Visit the department or advising office of your new major in the College of Human Sciences as directed by the college office.

New Students

If you are a new student and you have not started classes:

  • If you have been offered admission to Iowa State but have decided to change your major, you should complete the change application form at the Office of Admissions website.
  • If your new major is in a different college than your previous one, the admissions office will notify the colleges of the change. If you have not attended orientation, you will receive a new invitation from your new college.
  • If you have already attended orientation, you need to contact the advising office of your new major to make adjustments to your schedule after you make a change of major.
